High on an eastern-facing ridge with views downtown Los Angeles, the Banyan Tree house is an art studio and sanctuary. Rockefeller Partners (RPA) was originally commissioned by the client to design a residence that was never realized but working together once again on this project; they were able to create a tree house with a striking butterfly roofline. The structure is perched on top of steel pylons that emulate natural branches. The Architects have design not a literal tree house but instead an interpretation of one that pays homage to the pre-existing tree. All the surfaces of the residence are covered by wood (cedar & walnut) thus creating warmth. Every surface of the tree house is appointed with wood, creating an unparalleled level of warmth.
