The Helsinki Seafarers´ Centre situated in Vuosaari harbour is a juxtaposition that required a sensitive and carefully considered strategy. The building is to serve as a place for multipurpose use for the seamen that arrive at the harbour from afar. ARK-house Architects have created a building with a unique identity using wood as homage to the wooden ships and the purposefulness of the material. Wood was also chosen to create a cosy atmosphere as well as tackling the ecological challenges of present time. This sensitivity of the chosen material helps promote an experience of physical and spiritual nourishment. Concrete walls that are casts onside have been used to reinforce the wooden frame (mainly Siberian larch) of the building.
