mountain shelter

Snæfellsstofa Visitor Center by ARKÍS architects communicates with the surrounding nature and is divided into three parts so that it can be utilized in different ways, depending on the season. The center is placed on the site with a change in elevation so that the building gently glides over the terrain,  indirectly sheltering it from winds, ample daylight and surrounding mountain views. The Architects design were inspired by the eternal creative force of the glacier because it provides models for the spaces and forms found in the building. The material are largely composed of local materials; local larch, turf roof and landscaping walls of local rock.
