modern tradition

Wizja Architects house project in Burow, close vicinity to Krakow, Poland is placed on a south slope with a gentle descend towards a valley. The main concept was to create a contemporary interpretation of a traditional single family house of the Małopolska region. The Architects have achieved this by simplifying the local building form, through a search for clear building edges. The façade materials were restricted to Siberian larch accompanied by glass white the southern retaining wall was made from raw reinforced concrete.

writers refuge

JVA created a building that follows the height lines of the terrain and an underground pipeline, define the geometry of the plan. By doing this, the building is divided into a space that firstly steps into a garden without any green and from here, the resident can enter the indoor space. The Architect also created the garden and indoor space by joining it together into a small world (i.e. separated form the surrounding family life). Openings are carefully set to allow for views and light without possibility to look directly in from the outside.

the boys anthem

Guess who just got back today,
Them wild-eyed boys that'd been away,
Haven't changed, had much to say,
But man, I still think them cats are crazy.
They were askin' if you were around,
How you was, where you could be found.
Told them you were livin' downtown,
Drivin' all the old men crazy.

The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).
I said The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town.
The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).
The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town). You know that chick that used to dance a lot,

Every night, she'd be on the floor, shakin' what she's got.
Man, when I tell ya she was cool, she was red hot.
I mean she was steamin'.
And that time over at Johnny's place,
Well, this chick, she got up and slapped Johnny's face,
Man, we just fell about the place,
If that chick don't wanna know, forget her.

The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town.
I said The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town.
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town.
The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town.

Spread the word around guess who's back in town
You spread the word around
Friday night they'll be dressed to kill,
Down at Dino's bar and grill
The drink will flow, and blood will spill,
And if the boys wanna fight you better let 'em.
That jukebox in the corner blasting out my favorite song,
The nights are gettin' warmer, it won't be long,
Won't be long 'til summer comes,
Now that the boys are here again.

The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).
The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).
The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).

Spread the word around
The boys are back in town, (the boys are back in town).
The boys are back, the boys are back.
The boys are back in town again
They're hangin' down at Dino's
The boys are back in town again!

fossae lumbales laterales

The phrase 'dimples of Venus' refers to the pair of sagittally symmetrical indentations sometimes visible on the human lower back, just superior to the gluteal cleft. The dimples are directly superficial to the two sacroiliac joints, the sites where the sacrum attaches to the ilium of the pelvis. This term, while being very informal, is not strictly slang but is a historically accepted name within the medical profession for the superficial topography of the sacroiliac joints hence the Latin name is fossae lumbales laterales (lateral lumbar indentations - literally translated as ditches or trenches). Dimples of Venus are rapidly gaining cultural momentum as a feature which heterosexual men find particularly attractive in females. Some male have also referred them as butt dimples.

Why should you like them?
  1. They make the beach a more fun place to be.
  2. Butt dimples go well with low-rise jeans.
  3. They're relatively unknown. A lot of girls have no idea they've got these butt accessories.
  4. Butt dimples are getting more popular!
  5. If a girl catches you staring at her ass, you can pretend it was the dimples (a close second). Phew! Close call there.
  6. Makes for a good pickup line.

mountain shelter

Snæfellsstofa Visitor Center by ARKÍS architects communicates with the surrounding nature and is divided into three parts so that it can be utilized in different ways, depending on the season. The center is placed on the site with a change in elevation so that the building gently glides over the terrain,  indirectly sheltering it from winds, ample daylight and surrounding mountain views. The Architects design were inspired by the eternal creative force of the glacier because it provides models for the spaces and forms found in the building. The material are largely composed of local materials; local larch, turf roof and landscaping walls of local rock.

assange aka dr. evil

Considering the headlines of WikiLeaks recently, I've decided to post this project of Pionen White Mountain by Albert France-Lanord Architects. The former 1,200sqm  Cold War bunker is 30m down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm. One of the original founders of WikiLeaks is architect John Young. In actual fact, this White Mountain facility is Bahnhof computer center that hosts two of the infamous servers.

barn maid

SKAARA Arkitekter AS's new building replaces an old derelict barn, and complies a sheltered court yard together with the existing main building which accommodates a small apartment, sauna/fitness room and a double garage with storage space. The Architects have created three pitched roofs to represent their new interpretation of the old saddle roof. The building is constructed with a masonry ground floor base with natural stone facing and laminated wooden beams in the roof structure. The gables are clad with timber battens and the roofing material is of wood boards. Due to this, it is highly insulated in order to reduce energy demands. Windows are of low energy class  and heat is supplied by a heat pump. The Architects have also painted the wooden facades with environmentally friendly matt 'Falurød' paint which give the building a soft red tone. Meanwhile the interior are a mix of oak flooring, silver varnished wood panels and natural stone.

three tako sushi please

The new Haiku Sushi is located at the open courtyard of the recently completed Shanghai International Finance Center. Imagine Native utilised the concept of origami as the major driven force throughout the restaurant design. Looking closer, the Architects have sub divided the space in different zones, sushi bar, drinking bar, two main dining areas, booth seating and tatami rooms with each of these zones formed by an origami feature constructed by colors and different materials (i.e. perforated aluminum composite panels, translucent stone panels and linen fabrics). They have also used different lighting effects to create each zone's spatial character. An origami suspended on the ceiling from the entrance to the VIP rooms unifies each zones and creates a spatial transition throughout the restaurant.

more than meets the eyes

Consexto created a house that could transform itself in a 44 m/sq space for a useful and livable space. It has 5 spaces, 2 of them completely flexible and transformable by result of a displacement of a cabinet/wall. The cabinet/wall serves as bedroom wardrobe and on the other side rises an extendable dining table, a mini bar and an integrated home cinema. There Architects made sure the passage whenever the living area become greatest, is able to access to a higher niche where the bed is. By doing this, the whole perimeter area gained can be used for storage and placement of a built-in LCD. The basic concept of this design is to maximise the profitability of space. Technology was used extensively to help the Architects aim with the kitchen and toilet equipped with cabinets that blend and automatically glide into the wall, mirrors with monitored exhaustion and all electronic devices (including natural and artificial lighting) are fully controlled by a home automation system applied.

wooden islands

Yet another SKAARA Arkitekter's project for a cottage that replaces an old shed. The building is twofold with one residence zone and one bedroom area, combined with a protected patio giving shelter to different wind conditions. The situation forms an open wing plan which opens towards the south with the south wing contains the private zone with compact sleeping cabins. Meanwhile, the east wing consists of one large open living/kitchen area, divided by a split-level, emphasising the view of Jomfruland. The Architect have chosen pine facade that is treated with iron-sulfate and a sedum-moss roof to capture the coloring in the surrounding.

hollow footprints

At the beginning of 2001 the Granollers Borough Council commissioned Alfa Polaris  to carry out the concept design and the detailing document of a new link between two urban areas. The design of the proposed link, a footbridge next to the junction of the Sant Ferran St. with Verge de la Mercè St. and Sant Marc St. at the Terra Alta side, was strongly conditioned by the asymmetric shape of the cross section of the road trench. The Architects chose Cor-ten steel because they wanted a solution with reduced whole life cost and environmental burdens. LED lamps known for their long life span and energy efficiency is used for the street lighting over the deck and polymeric timber was chosen for the decking over the structure. The Architects proposed a cranked shape beam, varying in width and in depth, spanning 32.7 metres, formed by two Cor-ten steel hollow box girders. Over the main span the footpath is channelled by this two box girders which are linked together at bottom flanges by transversal beams. The latter, in turn, give support to the two metre wide polymeric timber decking through longitudinal joists. The Granollers Borough Council gave the necessary funds to build the scheme in 2009 the Architects was commissioned to carry out the site supervision.
