Hurrah! Another Mercado but this time it's not a temporary structure. Unlike my previous post which was based in Madrid, Willy Müller Architects’ flower market Mercabarna-Flor is in the Catalonia region of Barcelona. Unfortunately, the previous market was destroyed in 2001 by a fire. The Architects was inspired from flower fields hence why the zinc roof has been designed with vertical bars of colour to imitate the aerial view of cultivated flower fields. The viewer will notice that the roof folds between the walls and floors thus creating entrances, loading zones or sheltered areas around the perimeter of the building. By doing so, the Architects have made the main area into a multi-purpose space for plant logistics and accessory market. Also, the elaborate roof connects the offices, education centre for the florists, restaurant and space for events.
