A private house designed by Architects Mackay and Partners near Byron Bay on Australia’s east coast. The whole idea of the house is to provide a sense of isolation and protection. Internally divided into two levels; ground floor for entry, living and dining with open kitchen, while the upper level is bedrooms and associated bathrooms. Cast concrete, Sen timber and corian surfaces are used for the interior and is designed not to intrude on the scenery. The simple layout of the ground floor is to accentuate the linearity of the Pacific coast. A full height sliding glass provides access to the pool and desks, connecting inside and outside spaces.
The house incorporates a number of sustainable elements such as a open glazed side design that allows for natural cross cooling ventilation, a supplementary cooling system which uses in-ground water to provide cooling for the hottest days of the year, heating via an in-ground hydronic heating system, LED as an only lighting source, security systems that interlinks with the house lighting system as to not be left switched on when not in used, taps and white goods with the highest energy and water efficiency ratings, a solar panels and a rain-water storage tank.
